Three-day volunteer event to give back to the community
Madison, Wis. – Employees at National Guardian Life Insurance Company (NGL) proudly participated in the 2016 Days of Caring event through United Way of Dane County. Employees chose their volunteer activity from a variety of available community projects. This year, 29 NGL employees participated in the three-day volunteer event from August 16-18.
NGL strongly believes in giving back to the community both financially and through volunteerism. Each year, employees are offered eight paid workday hours to volunteer at a nonprofit of their choice. Many employees use this time to participate in Days of Caring projects.
Below are highlights of NGL employee volunteer projects during the 2016 Days of Caring.
Job Readiness Fair
On August 16, eight NGL employees helped with United Way of Dane County's Job Readiness Fair. The fair provided community members with an opportunity to prepare for job searching and interviewing, as well as assistance on financial planning, hair/clothing/make-up tips, affordable child care and more.
Job Readiness Fair participants were also able to shop for new outfits for interviews and/or on the job clothes.
NGL employees, Angelita Alvarado, Robin Benike, Whitney Chapman, Jeanne Curley, Lori Hogan, Christian Jones, Tina Riggle and Leah Tekippe, assisted attendees in finding the best outfit for their needs and helped them build confidence for their next job interview!
Christian Jones, Application Analyst at NGL shared his experience, "This was my first time volunteering with NGL. It was a lot of fun and it felt good to connect with a few people who attended the fair. I helped provide them with multiple outfits. It was also a great team environment where I got to learn a little more about my coworkers. I look forward to volunteering more in the future!"
Clean Apartment for a Senior Citizen
On August 17, Alyssa Luize volunteered to clean a senior citizen's apartment. She helped to clean and tidy the apartment of a local elderly gentleman.
Projects at Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS)
There were two teams who volunteered for various projects at DAIS, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of domestic violence survivors and their families.
The first team of Sarah Baugnet, Chloe Brown, Lois Endres-Tankersley, Emily Merline, Felicia McKenzie, Andrea Rouleau, Mindy Scheiner and Julie Smith helped to deep clean the Kid's Space and Support Group area.
On August 18, the second team of Josh Burrington, Matt Flom, Michele Gjertson, Christian Jones, Sarah Scott, Alyssa Witte and Vivian Velez performed a variety of maintenance projects throughout the building.
DAIS posted on social media, "Although it might not seem glamorous, the hard work from the two NGL teams mean so much to all of us at DAIS. Because of their help, our building will continue to be a clean and welcoming space to everyone who comes here."
Potato Picking
On August 18, five NGL employees traded in their daily work routines to dig potatoes at Lacy Garden on Whalen Road in Fitchburg. It was hot, dirty and somewhat buggy digging up the potatoes, but that didn't stop David Allen, Tracy Bredeson, Jerie Olson, Sarah Scott and Shiela Steensland from picking 400 pounds of potatoes!
"It was satisfying work knowing that the potatoes will be sent to food pantries and distributed to families in need," said Tracy Bredeson, VP and Director of Human Resources at NGL.
