Founded in 1909, our first insurance policy – valued at $5,000 – was sold a year later. Throughout the years, NGL grew by being active in the merger and acquisition arena, increasing our size significantly through these transactions. Commercial Travelers Life Insurance Company (formerly Commercial Travelers Mutual Insurance Company) held a special meeting on April 25 in Utica, N.Y., where policyholders approved the demutualization of Commercial Travelers and subsequent acquisition by NGL. Read the article here.

John D. Larson stepped down as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Larson served on the Board since May 1974 and was Chairman since 2004. He remains a Board Director and appointed Chairman Emeritus. Read the article here.

David G. Walsh, longtime NGL Board member, and former Vice Chairman, replaced John D. Larson as Chairman of the Board of Directors.


NGL entered into the individual long term care insurance market.


NGL acquired the Individual Life and Annuity business of Madison National Life Insurance Company (Madison, Wis.). The acquired business consists primarily of ordinary life, universal life and annuities totaling approximately $260 million of reserves representing 280,000 policyholders. NGL entered into an affiliation with Commercial Travelers Life Insurance Company (formerly Commercial Travelers Mutual Insurance Company), located in Utica, N.Y. This marks NGL's entrance into the student accident and health market, as well as permitting NGL access to the state of New York.

John D. Larson retires as Chief Executive Officer after 43 years of service. Larson remains Chairman Emeritus of NGL's Board of Directors.
